Cuphead multiplayer on one computer3/10/2024 His jumps, dashes and shots feel spot on. One thing that they totally nailed is the feel of controlling the titular character. While every facet of the presentation is flawless, the gameplay is great, but not perfect. It almost made me look forward to losing, because I knew I would get treated to funny pun to make me feel better. Each boss delivers so much personality, not only in their animations and transformations, but in the hilarious dialogue they spew at you when they beat you. In addition to the visual style itself, the character designs are really strong, which is highly important in such a boss-driven experience. There isn’t a single track in this fantastic soundtrack that I didn’t love. The jazzy, big band tunes feel like they are right out of the era they try to evoke, but also somehow fit the fast-paced, hectic gameplay here perfectly. What I found to be the most pleasant surprise is that the music is of similar quality. Animations are fluid, and feel like they’re ripped out of a classic cartoon. Every single boss, every single level and all the menus, shops and overworlds are gorgeous to look at. The Devil Deals the Cardsīefore I keep going, let me get this out of the way: Cuphead is a visual masterpiece. The story is told through beautiful images in the game’s art style, and it’s just a little dark, which makes this more interesting than the cartoony wrapping suggests. In order to keep their souls, they have to go out into the overworld and appropriately beat up all of the Devil’s other debtors. Cuphead and his pal Mugman went on an ill-advised trip to the Devil’s casino, and ended up gambling–and losing–their souls. Not all may truly enjoy the uncompromising difficulty of this game, but I found it to be pleasant, and this gameplay really makes this title stand out when compared to other indie platformers.Ĭuphead has a simple premise. The game unfolds much more like a boss rush, one that can be as exhausting as it is exhilarating. The hand-drawn style perfectly evokes the most surreal elements of cartoons from the 1930s, and it doesn’t ever compromise on perfectly delivering this style.Įven more surprising than the visuals, however, is that the game that lies under the hood is not your typical indie platformer. Announced all the way back in 2014, it’s clear that a lot of work went into perfecting this game’s presentation, to the point where it may very well be one of the most beautiful 2D games ever conceived. It’s been a long road for Cuphead, an ambitious indie title that is the first project coming from developers Studio MDHR. I played the PC version of Cuphead. The game is also available on XBox One.
